Penalty calculation
How the race penalty is worked out, step by step, under the FIS Alpine Points rules, art. 4.4.
What it's for
The penalty is the number added to every racer's race points to give their FIS points for the race. Race Bureau calculates it under the Rules for the FIS Alpine Points, art. 4.4 (edition 2025/26), and shows the working on Results & publish › Penalty calculation so the TD can check it line by line.
How it is calculated
Race Bureau builds three sums, each from five racers:
- A — the best five at the finish. The five lowest FIS list points among the top ten classified racers (art. 4.4.3). Every racer sharing 10th place belongs to that top ten (4.4.5).
- B — the best five at the start. The five lowest FIS list points among the starters (4.4.2). A starter is anyone classified, DSQ, DNF, or who did not start run 2. A racer who did not start run 1 (DNS, or NPS in the FIS sense) is not a starter.
- C — the race points of A's five racers, each capped at the discipline maximum (4.4.7).
Then:
- Calculated penalty = (A + B − C) ÷ 10, rounded half-up at the third decimal (4.4.8): 13.654 becomes 13.65, 13.655 becomes 13.66.
- A racer with no points, or with more than the discipline maximum, counts as the maximum (4.4.4). Fewer than five point-holders among the starters: the gaps are filled with the maximum.
- A tie for the fifth-best list points goes to the racer with the higher race points, which gives the better penalty (4.4.6).
- Applied penalty = calculated penalty + the category adder, then held between the category minimum and maximum. The adder, minimum and maximum come from the first page of the FIS points list in force (art. 4.5). The adder is added first, then the result is clamped. A below-minimum race in a category with minimum 20 and adder 8 publishes 20.00, not 28.00.
All sums run in whole hundredths, so 44.09 never becomes 44.089999.
What you can change
- The adder and minimum are read from the points list's own page. ↺ auto puts a hand-edited value back to the list's.
- The penalty is per race. Set the ACTIVE RACE in the header first.
TBC: the verbatim text of art. 4.4 is not held in the app; the steps above follow the article's numbering. Quote the article itself when the TD needs the wording.
